About Us
Hawai'i Mushroom Farmers with a Passion for Community
Our Story
Aloha from Jordan & Keana
Aloha! We’re Jordan Hanson and Keana Mossman, the farmers behind Bun & Beard.
We met online back in 2016 and bonded quickly over our introverted, self-reliant personalities, and a shared dream to live life a little more simply. We wanted to grow our own food, cook more meals at home, and build a lifestyle connected to the 'āina and community around us.
That dream started small: just two people experimenting in the garden, learning what worked (and what definitely didn’t) in Hawai‘i’s unique climate. Over time, our backyard project grew into something more. We fell in love with mushrooms—how beautiful, flavorful, and surprisingly easy they are to grow sustainably—and started imagining what it would look like to share them with others.
In 2021, we launched Bun & Beard Farms to do just that.
Today, we grow rare, gourmet mushrooms right here in Kaimukī and sell them in person at O‘ahu farmers markets. Our goal is to make it easier (and less intimidating) for kamaʻāina to bring something new, fresh, and locally grown into their kitchens. We’re always happy to answer questions, share tips, and help you figure out the best way to cook what you bring home.
For us, this isn’t just about mushrooms, it’s about community, food security, and helping more people live a hands-on life with purpose.
We’re so glad you’re here.
A Hands-On Life with Purpose
Our Values
-
Community
We believe food should come with a face and a conversation. That’s why we show up in person at O‘ahu farmers markets—to connect, share, and build relationships with the people who bring our mushrooms home. Local food tastes better when it’s rooted in community.
-
Sustainability
We grow everything with Mālama ʻĀina in mind. That means using locally sourced substrate, minimizing plastic, and choosing practices that protect Hawai‘i’s land, air, and water. Our goal is to grow food that nourishes people and the planet.
-
Sovereignty
We believe Hawai‘i should be able to feed its own people. By growing rare, nutritious mushrooms here on island—and helping more kamaʻāina cook with them—we’re doing our small part to support food sovereignty and local resilience.

An ex-teacher who grew up hammering nails into spare 2x4’s in her dad’s garage and reading by flashlight after bedtime, Jordan didn’t always think a self-sufficient life on a farm was possible for her. After living in New York to attend grad school, falling in love and moving back to Oahu in 2017, she found a job teaching English to high schoolers. Soon after however, she felt overworked and listless with her new career. This led her to take up a hobby in woodworking, which reminded her how strong and capable she actually was. This, coupled with watching Keana turn their backyard into an urban garden oasis, is what motivated her to found Bun and Beard Farms LLC with him in 2021. She hopes Bun & Beard will encourage everyone, but especially women, to take charge and build the life they want with their own two hands.

Keana grew up working for his dad’s landscaping company alongside his older brother. He spent long afternoons pulling weeds, holidays going on estimates with potential clients and years fine-tuning growing and yard maintenance techniques. After graduating college with a degree in Physics and deciding against grad school, he started growing his own food in a small, hydroponics set up on his back porch. Ever the scientist, Keana continued to cultivate this interest through carefully calibrated experiments, which, over time, slowly expanded his small garden into a thriving, all-encompassing urban garden on his family’s property. After meeting Jordan in 2016, he realized that, together, they would be able to make his long-harbored dream for farm living a reality, which motivated him to found Bun and Beard Farms LLC with her in 2021. He hopes he can use this platform to share his passion and knowledge of farming with others like him.
