Better Mushrooms, Thoughtfully Grown

What sets us apart

  • Fresh

The produce you bring into your kitchen should be grown in Hawai’i, not shipped from thousands of miles away. Our mushrooms are grown right here on O‘ahu and harvested just before market—so they’re never sitting on boats or shelves. That means better texture, longer shelf life, and more flavor than anything you’ll find in the grocery store.

  • Rare

While the mushrooms we grow are rare, they should be easy to source and affordable enough to incorporate into your kitchen each week. We focus on specialty oyster varieties—like pink, blue, snow, and popham elm—that are hard to find in stores but surprisingly versatile at home. You shouldn’t have to hunt for something delicious.

  • Sustainable

We believe food should be grown with Mālama ʻĀina—not with practices that pollute our air, soil, and sea. That’s why we grow locally using recycled landscaping waste as substrate, minimize plastic, and avoid the fuel costs of shipping from the mainland. Local food isn’t just fresher—it’s a step toward a more self-reliant Hawai‘i.

About Us

Bun & Beard Farms is a small, homegrown mushroom farm on O‘ahu, started by two kamaʻāina with a shared love of self-reliance, good food, and getting their hands dirty. Co-founders Jordan & Keana met in 2016 and have spent the years since then turning their backyard in Kaimuki into a thriving urban garden. What began as a personal goal to live more sustainably turned into a mission to support Hawaii’s food sovereignty by bringing fresh, rare, and responsibly grown mushrooms to local markets across the island.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn More

  • They really are. Oyster mushrooms are a great source of plant-based protein—about 3 grams of protein per serving—plus B vitamins, potassium, and antioxidants. They’ve even been studied for their potential to support immune health and brain function. But most importantly? They’re an easy way to add something fresh, flavorful, and feel-good to your meals.

  • Oyster mushrooms are super versatile—just tear them into pieces and sauté in a hot pan with a little oil and salt until golden and tender. You can also roast, grill, or stir-fry them, and they work great in pasta, tacos, soups, or rice bowls. Not sure where to start? Come chat with us at the market—we love sharing ideas!

  • We’d love to! Growing mushrooms on O‘ahu is permitted, and we’re currently awaiting specific approvals to expand into lion’s mane and other gourmet varieties. In the meantime, we’re focused on growing the freshest oyster mushrooms we can—and we’ll be sure to announce any new arrivals once we’re cleared to offer them.

  • We’re a small operation, so right now the best way to get our mushrooms is in person at the market. That said, we know schedules don’t always line up—so if you can’t make it, just contact us and we’ll find a solution. We’re hoping to expand to more markets soon, so stay tuned!

  • Our mushrooms are usually harvested the night before or the morning of the market, so they’re incredibly fresh when you take them home. If stored properly—in a paper bag in the fridge—they’ll usually last 5-7 days. Just avoid sealing them in plastic, which can trap moisture and cause them to spoil faster.
